Drawing the Lines In the Sands

A touch of understanding can create the link between people or groups of people.  Even when we share a language, the level of understanding does not always match.  The bridge across the river of nuance, hyperbole, and colloquialism can be extremely tough to build let alone cross.  Traditions and expressions of such come from a blend of microcosms that we identify as family or upbringing in a community.  Each of us has different experiences and lessons that we have learned to help shape our thinking and mold our attitude.  It is a strong piece of evidence to support the idea that we are all a product of our environment.

So, what does this have to do with the world today?  Have we become so distracted by the onslaught of information from our telecommunication miracles of television and internet that we have lost our way?  We cling to the hopes as adults that we will be able to carry on the better parts of our cultures, but we often forget that how we reached this point.  Within this swirl of many distractions, we also find our visions looking at our steps and not where we going.

In the maelstrom of traditions and customs that our world has, each of us finds our own internal doctrine of beliefs.  One way can take on the role of believing that our ego can come to the solutions without pause.  The narcissistic tones of this avenue have their own drawbacks, but it propels the individual into states of fame or exile.  Either way, it has the possibilities of isolating the person when it is a community that is needed.

Yet, on the other hand, there is the conformist who loses the individualistic thoughts and succumbs to the idea that the community is the belief.  It is with this thinking that the ego of a person works toward the goals that better the community.  The teamwork that is inspired shows strength of each individual working together.  Within this environment, the stability of the society can hold strong for far longer than those societies that depend on one person to hold it together.

However, in our country of these United States of America, we have a created system of government which has evolved from the idea that a central figure is not the end all be all.  We have a centralized government that attends to the welfare of the whole while the individual states attend to the welfare of their jurisdiction.  The Constitution and its amendments seek to balance out the powers of the multiple sides.  On a purely ideal level, this system should be the idyllic framework for a society based on both the themes of community and individualism.  The balancing scales have often found they are weighted more to one side or the other in our history.  So, it begs the question of why this is happening and how are we going to find balance?

In a nutshell, it is our ideals that come into conflict.  It is the ignorance that a community has for another community and the reciprocation of this attitude.  Without the awareness of another, an individual or a community makes a judgment of another.  This will twist into a horrible conflagration.  The lack of knowledge in the details can create leaps of assumptions which help the entire matter to spiral out of control.  These reactions can be immediate or happen over time.

It also is the intolerance of another’s traditions or customs.  The friction caused by this can probe deeper into an individual’s ego or a community’s beliefs.  When one side removes the freedom for the opposing side to have their own traditions or customs or one side is unwilling to share the rights to those freedoms of belief, the results are a deeply draw line in the sand.  It becomes imbued with the power of a new belief that the other side is a lesser entity.  Once the sense of superiority takes root, generations can pass before anyone knows the cause or has any idea how to heal the wound.

We have that today in our society.  We have all found a way to forget who we were and where we have come from.  As a community, we are so focused on the how we are entitled to greatness rather than earning it through deeds and accomplishments.  As individuals, each of us finds that in order to reach our potential that another must be inferior to us.

No, there is a solution.  It is holding true to the values that were set down by our forefathers.  We are a great nation made of individuals and communities seeking with liberty to find the future that we create and not the one that we foolishly believe that we are entitled to.  The lines are drawn and we need to erase them to move on together.
